When you can’t tell a toy from a real car
By Matt O’Neill – 3 years ago 5 Comments – Share This article A recent study published in the journal Auto Practice shows that the popularity of the Ford Escape from the mid-1990s is on the rise.
The new study, which looked at car sales in the United States, UK and Australia, found that sales of Escape models increased between 2010 and 2012 from a peak of nearly 12 million to nearly 23 million.
The study also revealed that the average age of Escape buyers was 34 years old and they were more likely to live in the suburbs than other car types.
“While the Escape is a fun, easy-to-drive vehicle, it has been consistently ranked as one of the best-selling vehicles in its class in recent years,” said the study’s co-author Dr. Robert S. Siegel.
“While we can’t definitively say why the Escape has become so popular, one possible explanation could be a growing awareness of electric vehicles and a shift in consumer tastes.”
Siegel also pointed to the fact that the number of Escape owners in the US is on track to reach a record high in 2020.
“The recent growth in the popularity and demand for electric vehicles is likely due in part to increased awareness of EV technology and increased interest in the safety and comfort of EVs, as well as the desire to buy a more compact vehicle,” Siegel said.
“With the recent introduction of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, it is possible that EV sales will continue to accelerate, particularly as consumers increasingly look to save money by switching to an EV.”
While the popularity is great, Siegel acknowledged that the Escape still has a long way to go before it reaches mainstream status.
“We can’t say that the demand for the Escape will overtake the market for the Bolt EV anytime soon, but we do believe that the vehicle will continue its momentum over time,” he said.
The company’s EV strategy, the Escape, will be a key focus for Ford in 2020 as the automaker looks to further grow the market.
In addition to the Escape and Bolt EV models, Ford is also looking to introduce a new model to the market called the Escape Luxury, which will offer even more performance, luxury and safety features for the price of the Escape.
Ford will also unveil a smaller Escape next year.
